Mexico Reveals Fourth ‘Magical Town” in the Riviera Maya

As the Cancun area continues to attract global attention, the state of Quintana Roo and Government of Mexico have just unveiled an exciting tourism initiative for a nearby city. Cozumel is now officially designated a Magical Town or Pueblo Magico, joining three other cities in the same state with that title: Bacalar, Isla Mujeres, and Tulum. The secretary of tourism met with the mayors of each town this month to make it official. These tourism investments aim to offer travelers an enhanced experience and preservation of the area’s cultural heritage and natural wonders.

What are Pueblos Magicos or Magical Towns in Mexico?

A Pueblo Mágico, or Magical Town, is a designation given by the Mexican government to towns or villages that possess significant cultural, historical, or natural value. These towns are recognized for their unique charm, traditional architecture, rich cultural heritage, and distinctive local traditions. The Pueblo Mágico program aims to promote tourism and economic development in these areas by preserving their cultural identity and offering visitors authentic Mexican experiences.

To attain Magical Town status, a town must have a population exceeding 20,000, be situated within 124 miles of a prominent tourist hub, maintain a tourism development initiative for a minimum of three years, ensure the safety and well-being of visitors, and offer distinctive symbolic or cultural attractions. Last year over 100 cities were nominated for Magical Town status but only 45 were selected.

The extra tourism investment funds are used to revive historic architecture, fund new art installations, increase marketing budgets and to build new, modern visitor centers in Magical Towns. Travelers to Pueblos Mágicos can expect to encounter picturesque streets, vibrant markets, historical landmarks, and opportunities to immerse themselves in the local culture, making for unforgettable and enchanting experiences for years to come.

“Ángeles Verdes”: Helping Tourists & Addressing Safety Concerns

In addition to enhancing the tourist experience, Quintana Roo is also prioritizing the safety and convenience of travelers with the deployment of Green Angels, or Ángeles Verdes to Cozumel. These assistance teams will provide aid and support to tourists navigating the state’s most popular thoroughfares with roadside assistance and offering directions to popular destinations in English and Spanish.
